Drowsiness is a cognitive factor that affects human behavior such as response time. However, quantifying drowsiness in a subject measurement has been an unsolved challenge. In this study, I proposed a probabilistic definition for drowsiness and developed a drowsiness index based on the response time in a sustained attentional task. Results show that, with normalization and temporal smoothing, the drowsiness index is able to track the variation of drowsiness.
