From the End of Unitary Science Projection to the Causally Complete Complexity Science: Extended Mathematics, Solved Problems, New Organisation and Superior Purposes

Authors: Andrei P. Kirilyuk
Comments: 15 pages, 44 refs; Published as section 8.5 of the book: A. P. Kirilyuk, Theory of Everything, Ultimate Reality and the End of Humanity: Extended Sustainability by the Universal Science of Complexity (LAP LAMBERT Academic Publishing, Beau Bassin, 2017)

The deep crisis in modern fundamental science development is ever more evident and openly recognised now even by mainstream, official science professionals and leaders. By no coincidence, it occurs in parallel to the world civilisation crisis and related global change processes, where the true power of unreduced scientific knowledge is just badly missing as the indispensable and unique tool for the emerging greater problem solution and further progress at a superior level of complex world dynamics. Here we reveal the mathematically exact reason for the crisis in conventional science, containing also the natural and unified problem solution in the form of well-specified extension of usual, artificially restricted paradigm. We show how that extended, now causally complete science content provides various "unsolvable" problem solutions and opens new development possibilities for both science and society, where the former plays the role of the main, direct driver for the latter. We outline the related qualitative changes in science organisation, practice and purposes, giving rise to the sustainability transition in the entire civilisation dynamics towards the well-specified superior level of its unreduced, now well understood and universally defined complexity.

Low-Temperature Energy Efficiency of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Authors: Ashkan Nazari, Roja Esmaeeli, Seyed Reza Hashemi, Haniph Aliniagerdroudbari, Siamak Farhad
Comments: 7 Pages.

In this study, the low-temperature energy efficiency of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with different chemistries and nominal capacities at various charge and discharge rates is studied through multi-physics modeling and computer simulation. The model is based on the irreversible heat generation in the battery, leading to the charge/discharge efficiency in LIBs with graphite/LiFePO4, graphite/LiMn2O4, and graphite/LiCoO2 electrode materials in which the effects of the battery nominal capacity at various charge and discharge rates are studied. Using characterized sources of the heat generation in the LIB leads to providing a battery efficiency plot at different operation condition for each LIBs. The results of this study assist the battery engineers to have much more accurate prediction over the efficiency of the LIBs at low temperatures.

Experimental Investigation on Newtonian Drop Formation in Different Continuous Phase Fluids

Authors: Ashkan Nazari, Arash Nazari

In this work, formation water drops as a Newtonian fluid in different bulk fluids are investigated. A MATLAB code has been developed to process the images taken via a high speed camera in the lab to measure the contact angle of drop, as well as the drop’s diameter and volume at different stages of formation. It is found that the water drop shows similar behavior when they shaped in the liquid phase bulk fluid with different properties while the drop formation’s behavior is substantially different when water drops are formed in the gas bulk fluid. In addition, it is tried to predict the frequency of drop formation at different flow rates with regard to the inertial and surface tension forces applied to the dispread fluid.

A well-designed battery management system along with a set of voltage and current sensors is required to properly measure and control the battery cell operational variables for Hybrid Electric Aircrafts (HEAs). Some critical functions of the battery including State-Of-Charge (SOC) and State-Of-Health (SOH) estimations, over-current, and over-/under-voltage protections are mainly related to current and voltage sensor measurements. Therefore, in case of battery faults occur in HEA, designing a reliable and robust diagnostic procedure is essential. In this study, for Li-ion batteries, a new and fast fault diagnosis technique via collecting data is proposed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed diagnostic method is validated, and the results show how over-charge, over-discharge and sensor faults can be accurately detected.

Optimization of a Rainbow Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting System for Tire Monitoring Applications

Authors: RojaEsmaeeli, Haniph Aliniagerdroudbari, Ashkan Nazari, Seyed Reza Hashemi, Muapper Alhadri, Waleed Zakri, Abdul Haq Mohammed, Celal Batur, Siamak Farhad

Ambient energy harvesting using piezoelectric transducers is becoming popular to provide power for small microelectronics devices. The deflection of tires during rotation is an example of the source of energy for electric power generation. This generated power can be used to feed tire self-powering sensors for bicycles, cars, trucks, and airplanes. The aim of this study is to optimize the energy efficiency of a rainbow shape piezoelectric transducer mounted on the inner layer of a pneumatic tire for providing enough power for microelectronics devices required to monitor tires. For this aim a rainbow shape piezoelectric transducer is adjusted with the tire dimensions and excited based on the car speed and strain. The geometry and load resistance effects of the piezoelectric transducer is optimized using Multiphysics modeling and finite element analysis.

Risk-Reduction Credit for Very Early Warning Fire Detection at Nuclear Power Plants: from Faq to Fiction

Authors: Raymond H Gallucci

In 2004, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), with support from the commercial nuclear power industry, adopted the 2001 Edition of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 805, “Performance-Based Standard for Fire Protection for Light Water Reactor Electric Generating Plants,” as the means by which commercial nuclear power licensees could comply with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 50.48[c], to replace deterministic fire protection licensing bases with ones that are risk-informed and performance-based. To facilitate licensee “transitions” to the new licensing bases via NFPA 805, a “Frequently Asked Questions” (FAQs) program, established early during the pilot-plant phase, was expanded to enable use of consensus technical “short-cuts” for fire probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) methods. These “Fire PRA FAQs” enabled licensees, with NRC approval, to bypass more traditional means of establishing acceptable PRA method enhancements on an interim basis, pending eventual confirmation by test programs and/or more detailed analyses. The NRC approved several, of which perhaps the most substantial in providing risk reduction benefits was FAQ 08-0046 on “Incipient Fire Detection Systems,” more accurately characterized as “Very Early Warning Fire Detection Systems” (VEWFDSs). Controversial from the start, the hidden story behind this FAQ’s initial adoption is relevant to examination of the NRC NUREG report that later replaced it and remains in effect today. This article examines this backstory, tracing recommendations that were proposed and bypassed, then examines alternatives to the current guidance. These alternatives, which maximize possible risk reduction credit for VEWFDSs at nuclear power plants, remain at least a factor of two less than the current peak NUREG-2180 risk-reduction factor even before the latter accounts for the possibility of fire pre-emption altogether.
